Fig. 233. Woman's Body On Black Background

Origin   Karl Waldmann Museum, Belgium

Subject
Drawing of a naked young woman entitled "Woman's body on black background".
A little girl, a wheel and the shadow of a man with a megaphone.
The drawing of the naked young woman comes from a book by professor Carl Heinrich Stratz named "Die Schönheit des weiblichen Körpers", in English "The beauty of the female body". A subtitle "Den Müttern, Ärzten und Kunstlern gewidmet" shows that the book is made for mothers, doctors and artists. This is a multidiscilplinary book dealing with female body's growth, from little childhood until the end of puberty. To achieve this study, Stratz refers to medical drawings and especially a series of photographies.
Another part of the study is based on the detail of ideal proportions of each part of the body, as well as what can have an influence on the body shape, using objective criterions which determine a canon.
This edition could date from 1908.
