Berchtesgaden is located next to the austrian border in the south of Germany, known because of being the emplacement of Hitler's hideout. The woman is fencer Helene Mayer. As a token gesture aiming to mollify the international opinion, the German authorities allowed half-Jewish fencer Helene Mayer to represent Germany at the Berlin Olympic Games. She won a silver medal for the individual fencing event and, like the other German medallists, she gave the Nazi salute on the podium. After the Games, Helene Mayer went back to the United States. No other Jew competed for Germany. Yet nine Jewish athletes, including Mayer and five Hungarian, won medals during these Games. Karl Waldmann shows her submission to the Nazi regime. The "Zorro" mask remind us of fencing and the United States. The area of Obersalzberg (is mountainside retreat situated above the village of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria) was purchased by the Nazis in the 1920s for their senior leaders to enjoy. Hitler's mountain residence, the Berghof, was located here. Berchtesgaden and its environs (Stanggass) were fitted to serve as an outpost of the German Reichskanzlei office (Imperial Chancellery), which sealed the area's fate as a strategic objective for Allied forces in World War II. Some typical Third Reich buildings in Berchtesgaden include the railway station, that had a reception area for Hitler and his guests, and the post office next to the railway station. The Berchtesgadener Hof Hotel was a hotel where famous visitors stayed, such as Eva Braun, Erwin Rommel, Joseph Goebbels, and Heinrich Himmler, as well as Neville Chamberlain and David Lloyd George. |

Après les Jeux, Hélène Mayer retourna aux Etats-Unis. Aucun autre Juif ne concourut pour l’Allemagne. Toutefois, neuf sportifs juifs remportèrent des médailles lors de ces jeux, au nombre desquels Mayer et cinq Hongrois. Karl Waldmann nous indique sa soumission au régime par son salut nazi et la travestit avec un masque de Zorro rappelant l'escrime et les USA. La zone de Obersalzberg (est une retraite en montagne située au-dessus du village de Berchtesgaden en Bavière) a été acheté par les nazis dans les années 1920 pour que les hauts dirigeants puissent en profiter.
